of Insulated
Concrete
Form
construction.
Insulated
Concrete
Forms,
or ICFs,
are
polystyrene
building
blocks
that
assemble,
one
top
of one
another
to form
a wall
with
a hollow
cavity.
Concrete
is then
poured
into
the
hollow
cavity
to create
a solid
wall
with
uninterrupted
insulation
inside
and
out.
Unlike
normal
wood
framing
ICF
construction
eliminates
heat
transfer
from
convection,
conduction,
and
radiation
to the
true
R value
stated
by the
manufacturer.

Insulated
Concrete Form construction
is extremely resource
efficient. The continuous
insulation allows
no thermal bridging
through the wall
unlike regular framing,
and keeps indoor
temperatures consistent,
day and night, with
no unanticipated
air-leaks. On top
of it’s energy efficiency,
the blocks are fire
resistant, eliminating
risk of walls catching
on fire. Low man
hours keeps the
extra cost of material
from increasing
the overall expense;
usually ICF costs
only 1-2% more overall!
"A
lot of the problem
the concrete market
runs into is the
perception that
the cost of building
out of an ICF system
is considerably
higher than wood
frame. All things
considered, it's
not. The payback--the
insurance, energy
savings, termite
prevention and literally
no maintenance--better
than evens it out.
When you are building
out of wood, the
house might last
70 years, if it
is well maintained.
Concrete lasts several
lifetimes. It is
amazing that you
can do that with
something as simple
as concrete and
foam, but for some
builders, it is
hard to change old
habits. That requires
re-educating."
